What resources are available for Deaf Ministries?
The UMCD provides various resources including educational materials, community support groups, microgrants for new Deaf ministries, and advocacy programs aimed at empowering Deaf individuals and their allies. The Rev. LeRoy Schauer Endowed Fund for Deaf Ministry supports students at Wesley Theological Seminary who are pursuing or involved in Deaf Ministries. The Deaf Ministries book is comprehensive and offers many resources for starting a Deaf ministry.
Consider this liturgy for your next Deaf Awareness Sunday special service, such as in September and the 30-Days of Deaf Awareness Activities.
GRANTS – The Deaf & Hard of Hearing Ministries Committee of The UMC offers grants and scholarships. The Disability Ministries Committee of The UMC also offers small grants for accessibility and projects. The Mustard Foundation is also worth exploring for grants. Joni & Friends is a disability organization that also offers grants. Check with the UMCD board about any availability of microgrants.
Deaf-Disabled – For some Deaf and hard of hearing people with disabilities may experience barriers. Learning about one’s own disability, how to navigate with it / them, self-advocating, and being with others who are supportive are all helpful. Consider resources through the Disability Ministries Committee.
